Holy Week and Easter at
Storrs Congregational Church UCC
The apex of the Christian year in terms of worship and devotion is soon upon us. We invite all to join us for our observances of Holy Week and for our celebrations of Christ’s resurrection at Easter. No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s journey, God welcomes you… and so do we!
March 29: Palm Sunday
Sunday worship @ 10:00 a.m
Palm branches in hand, we join a procession of young and old singing sweet hosannas. This procession, begun centuries ago in Jerusalem, encircles the earth with ceaseless praise and now winds around our gathering space.
The Palm Sunday worship service begins with the palm processional, starting outside in the Parish House Courtyard, weather permitting (those with mobility concerns are invited to begin directly in the Meeting House).
Pastor Nancy preaching: “Dead Man Riding”. Scripture: Mark 11:1-11.
April 1: Manna in the Wilderness – Mid-week Communion
A contemplative time of worship and Holy Communion in the Waggoner Chapel:
Wednesdays in Lent, 5:45 – 6:15 pm.
April 2: Maundy Thursday
Worship-and-Meal Experience @ 6:30 pm in the Auditorium
Remembering Jesus’ gathering with his disciples on the night before he died, we gather around meal tables in the Auditorium to share in a multi-sensory and intergenerational worship experience. An interactive celebration of Holy Communion will be wrapped into and around our sharing of a simple supper together. And as we hear Jesus’ giving of a new commandment to serve and love one another as he washed his disciples feet, worshipers will be invited to share in one or more of a set of worship-and-prayer stations which embody this command, including: the ancient Maundy Thursday ritual of footwashing, a station for healing prayer and anointing, a station of contemplation, and more. We then disperse into the night as the shadows of the cross approach.
April 3: Good Friday
Worship @ 7:00 pm in the Meeting House
English speaking Christians call this day ‘Good’. It is a day, not of unmitigated mourning, as if Jesus were dead dead dead, but of profound contemplation of the mystery that, from the cross of death, God grants the world new life. Our worship—featuring the musical leadership of our choir—will follow the deepest and most ancient of Good Friday worship traditions, centered around the passion story according to the gospel of John, prayers of intercession, and worship of the Crucified One through the procession of the cross.
April 5: Easter Sunday
Celebrate the glory of God’s victory over evil and death in the resurrection of Christ!
Sunrise Service @ 6:15 am at the Storrs Cemetery
(~60 North Eagleville Rd., Storrs)
A simple service of scripture, song, and reflection at the top of the hill overlooking Storrs.
Festival Worship Service @ 10:00 am in the Meeting House
A grand and majestic Easter celebration, featuring glorious music of choir and organ, scripture and prayer, and the resurrection feast of Holy Communion.
Pastor Matt preaching: “Unexpected Endings”. Scripture: Isaiah 25:6-9 & Mark 16:1-8
