SCC looks forward to a new year at UConn

The Storrs Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, and it’s UCC UConn campus ministry are looking forward with excitement at the start of a new year at the University of Connecticut.  In a greeting to returning students, our senior minister, the Rev. Matthew Emery, wrote, “We here at Storrs Congregational Church UCC are looking forward to your presence back among us, and to all the potential that the new year holds.  I believe that God is doing exciting things in you — yes, you — as well as among our congregation, on our UConn campus, and throughout the world all around us. It will be an awesome wonder to be with you again as we live into those exciting things.”  Opening weekend at UConn is August 26 – 28, 2016, with freshman move-in on Friday, August 26th, and upperclassmen returning to campus over the rest of the weekend, Saturday and Sunday, August 27th and 28th.

We have a number of events and reach-outs planned for the weekend and into the early portion of the semester.  These include:

Backback Blessing - for websiteSunday Worship for UConn Opening Weekend & the Blessing of the Backpacks

This Sunday, August 28th, is our ‘Rally’ Sunday, as things come back into the full swing of things for the semester.   During worship, we’ll be celebrating the “Blessing of the Backpacks” as we pray God’s blessing on a new year for students of all ages, preschool to PhD.  UConn students in particular are invited to join with us on the 28th… and should feel free to bring along a backpack, bookbag, briefcase, or other symbol of the school journey for the coming year.

All UConn students are welcome to join us for breakfast on the lawn, 9:00 to 9:45 am, before the 10:00 am worship service.  Reconnect with old friends and meet some new ones, as we usher in this new year together!  Pre-worship breakfast will continue, inside, each week as long as there is interest…  We know most of the dining halls don’t open till 10:30 on Sunday, and we don’t want that to keep you away!

Carillon BellsConcert on the Lawn:  Thursday, September 1, 6:00 pm

Come join us on the lawn in front of the church for a fun evening of hanging-out and music with a Concert on the Lawn.  David Maker, our carillonneur-in-residence, along with two guests will be twinkling the bells up in the church steeple.  A great time to relax during the first week of classes, meet new friends and reconnect with old ones, and simply enjoy a late-summer evening outside before the schedule gets too hectic!
