Prayer Shawl Ministry

"Shawls ... made for centuries universal and embracing, symbolic of an inclusive, unconditionally loving, God. They wrap, enfold, comfort, cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and beautify. Those who have received these shawls have been uplifted and affirmed, as if given wings to fly above their troubles…”

Prayer Shawl Ministry pictureShawl ministry was begun in 1998 by members of the Hartford Seminary. The following is from their website, www.shawlministry.com.  “…love of knitting have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings are knitted into every shawl. The knitter begins each shawl with prayers and blessings for the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl….. the blessing is rippled from person to person, with both the giver and receiver feeling the unconditional embrace of a sheltering, mothering God.”

The prayer shawl ministry meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 11:00 am in the library. If you are interested in participating by knitting or crocheting shawls but are unable to attend the monthly meeting, you are welcome to make shawls on your own. If you have any questions please contact Jennie Talbot or Nancy Rucker. Directions for making the shawls are available in the Parish House lounge. They can also be found at the Shawl Ministry website. Follow this link . . .

A guide to the shawl-knitting ministry, Knitting into the Mystery, is available in the church library. It is an entertaining book on how to knit shawls and the history of shawl ministry as well as appropriate prayers and notes to enclose with shawls when presented.

If you know of someone who could benefit from receiving a shawl, please contact Pam Roberts, Jay Terbush, or Hilary Dahlberg.
