THE COLOR OF WATER: A BLACK MAN’S TRIBUTE TO HIS WHITE MOTHER by James McBride is the book for discussion November 17 in person and via Zoom.

According to Kirkus Review, THE COLOR OF WATER is “an eloquent narrative in which a young Black man searches for his roots against the wishes of his mother”. As a child, McBride becomes aware of others around him and wonders why he looks different from his mother, Ruth.  She is a Jewish Polish immigrant who marries a Black man, converts to Christianity and raises eleven children. Both James and his mother spend much of their lives feeling that they do not belong to their communities. The book explores the themes of racial identity, family and self-discovery.
